Venues reminded to play it safe on Australia Day

Inspectors from Liquor & Gaming NSW will be out in force to ensure venues comply with their responsible service of alcohol requirements on and around Australia Day.

The state’s licensed venues are being urged to prioritise the safety of their patrons and remain on alert, including by checking IDs to prevent minors accessing alcohol and by actively working to prevent intoxication, violence and antisocial behaviour.

Liquor & Gaming NSW Executive Director - Regulatory Operations & Enforcement, Jane Lin said inspectors would target several areas where large numbers of people were expected to gather.

“We want to ensure everyone can enjoy Australia Day while avoiding any potential alcohol-related issues,” she said.

“Our inspectors will be attending venues across the Sydney CBD and Greater Sydney areas to ensure patrons are kept safe while attending licensed venues.”

“Licensed venues need to make sure they have procedures in place to deal with increased patronage and to make sure that alcohol is consumed in a safe and responsible way.”

Inspectors will also attend venues to ensure compliance on the Wednesday night before the Australia Day public holiday, and again on the weekend.

In addition, Liquor & Gaming NSW will be monitoring the industry for irresponsible liquor promotions, including those that promote the excessive or rapid consumption of alcohol, and will take action to restrict or prohibit activities that do not comply with the Liquor Promotion Guidelines.

Promotions encouraging the excessive consumption of alcohol do not comply with liquor promotion guidelines.
