Venues urged to plan ahead for Anzac Day

Liquor & Gaming NSW is urging licensed venues across the state to plan ahead and have proper measures in place to ensure safe and responsible Anzac Day commemorations on 25 April.

Pubs and clubs can face additional challenges on Anzac Day associated with managing the larger than normal crowds, alcohol consumption and the playing of two-up.

Liquor & Gaming NSW Executive Director Regulatory Operations & Enforcement, Jane Lin, said inspectors will be conducting checks of licensed premises in regional areas and the Sydney CBD over Anzac Day, to ensure compliance with the State's liquor and gaming laws.

“Two up is a great way for people to come together at pubs and clubs to enjoy the Anzac spirit. While venues do not need a permit to host two-up, they are encouraged to fully understand and observe the traditional rules of the coin-tossing game,” Ms Lin said.

“Adequate planning for Anzac Day by licensed venues should involve venue managers and frontline staff, and give particular consideration to the escalated risk associated with larger crowds, increased rates of intoxication, gambling disputes, extended high volume trade, and special Anzac Day liquor promotions.”

Licensed venues have also been reminded to ensure their advertising and promotions are responsible and align with liquor promotion guidelines.

“Anzac Day commemorations honour servicemen and women past and present, and as such, it is important that venues conduct event promotions responsibly,” Ms Lin said.

“I also encourage members of the community who participate in Anzac Day services, local reunions, marches and commemorative events to show support for our defence force personnel in a safe way, particularly if they attend licensed venues on the day,”
